8 Things We Can All Learn From Carrie Bradshaw

If you are not familiar with Carrie Bradshaw or her show, Sex and the City, then it is time to move out from your home under a rock! The 1998 sitcom, Sex and the City continues to teach us everything we should know about how to navigate adulthood, relationships, and of course, sex. Here is everything that we can learn from Carrie and her besties throughout the series.

1. Always Rely On Your Girlfriends

In Sex and the City, we see several men come and go through Carrie and her friends’ lives. Regardless of which guy that the girls end up within the end, the constant thing in the show is that the four of them always remain close-knit.

Every time a relationship turns sour, there is a bad breakup, or a date gone wrong, Carrie, Samantha, Miranda, and Charlotte have each other to fall back on. Carrie teaches us to keep our girlfriends close at all times because sometimes they are all we will have!

2. Never Estimate The Power Of A Good Pair Of Shoes

Besides the friendship between those four New York girls, Carrie Bradshaw knows how to sport a good pair of shoes. Carrie never had to talk herself into a good bargain on a pair because when she saw the perfect pair, they were hers!

It might seem like such a cliche girl thing to do with shoe shopping and the art of it, but both Carrie Bradshaw and SJP encourage us to act on our womanly instincts and buy the shoes!

3. Put Your Own Feelings First

In all of the dates, flings, and relationships that we see Carrie go through in Sex and the City, Carrie always thinks of herself and her happiness above all. If the relationship starts to go south or something is off about the man, Carrie Bradshaw shows us that we need to consider what is best for ourselves rather than sitting in a relationship that does not benefit us.

For example, with Carrie and Big, there were times where it would really hurt to be apart from him, but she knew it was in her best interest to step away from the relationship and the games that were played in it. We need to take care of ourselves first before trying to survive in a relationship.

4. Be Adventurous With Your Fashion Choices

As the ’90s and 2000s fashion comes back into style, we see throughout Sex and the City that Carrie was rocking these trends before we called them throwback styles! Out of the three of her besties, Carrie made the more daring fashion choices in her everyday life and especially if she was going out.

With her choices in fashion throughout the show, Carrie Bradshaw teaches us to not be afraid to wear that pair of jeans that is risky or the top that is out of our comfort zone. Play with your closet and ask yourself next time, “What Would Carrie Bradshaw Do?” or WWCBD!

5. Budgets Are Important Even In NYC

In my recent rewatch of SATC, one thing that kept sticking out to me was the number of times that Carrie found herself in a financial pickle. She would find herself short on cash or in a situation that might be solved if she would have budgeted her money correctly.

The glamorized lifestyle of living in New York City still comes with watching your bank account or being mindful of how you are spending your money. We can learn from Carrie’s spending habits that sometimes we should just buy the shoes or that we should wait for the shoes to go on clearance!

6. Hustle Hard, Girl!

The classic monologue at the beginning of every episode of Sex and the City just so happens to be Carrie writing for her column. Yes her dating life had a lot to do with her writing and her job, but Carrie Bradshaw made sure that she and her career came first.

Later in the series, we see that she is able to publish a book and eventually is well known in New York City for her writing. From her example, we can see that her hard work pays off and that you have to hustle to make it!

7. There Will Be Truly Awful Dates

The complexity of all of the men that we are introduced through Carrie Bradshaw is that they represent men accurately. We meet some weirdos, some funny ones, some really great ones, and some mediocre ones. In this depiction in the show because of Carrie’s column, we learn more than we think.

We learn that there will be some bad dates or that you might get stood up, but we also learn that there are some really great people out there that you have not met yet. Aiden and Mr. Big are examples of that for Carrie but she had to go on several dates before even meeting them.

8. You Are Allowed To Want Other Things In Life

The final thing that stands out through the character of Carrie Bradshaw is that she wants different things than her friends, and that is okay. Charlotte wants the husband, the house, and the baby before age 35, but Miranda really wants to go far at her firm but accepts life as it is some.

With Carrie, she knows that she might want to get married but in the meantime, it is okay that it is just her but it is also okay that some people do want to be married. Carrie shows us that it is okay to want other things or things that are not in the status quo.

Carrie Bradshaw shows us that it’s okay to mess up and make mistakes in our adulthood. Sarah Jessica Parker plays the part perfectly and lets us all know that we are all faking it on the inside!
