In a world that seems to be full of lovey-dovey couples, being single may make you feel like the odd man out, especially in college. It doesn’t help that things like ESU Crushes crush the hopes and dreams of people not lucky enough to be mentioned. However, I’m here to tell you that college is the best time to be single. All those of you not sharing Valentine’s Day with an SO shouldn’t have to feel like you’re missing out. Embrace the single life. Keep reading for 8 reasons why being single at ESU is awesome.
Use this new slate to find yourself. Chances are you will not graduate as the same person you were when you enrolled. Starting this new chapter of your life without any attachments is healthier, since it gives you more time to focus on yourself.
College can be very time consuming, which may make your S.O. feel like you are pulling away. However, when you are single in college, you can do whatever you like whenever you like without worrying about someone else’s feelings. You can throw yourself into school, work, or extra-curricular activities.
Sometimes, the social aspects of college life can be mentally draining. You should take yourself out once in a while to regroup and recharge your batteries. Grab a bite, get your nails done, get a massage, go to the gym, or do whatever it is that you do when you like to be alone. Extra perk: the creative juices flow best when you are alone!
With such a busy schedule, the last thing you need is more drama in your life. Relationships can be very dramatic, but being single in college reduces that stress. Your bf/gf can’t cheat on you or break your heart if you don’t have one.
Let’s face it…when we have a new boyfriend or girlfriend, we tend to want to spend all of our time with him or her. This decreases our chances of meeting new people and building a stronger network. Therefore, without someone holding you back, you are more likely to discover a new circle of interesting people.
If you’ve ever watched a movie about college, then you will remember the scenes where one person has an important test to study for, while another attempts to coerce them into “studying” the human body instead. Although these distractions may sound exciting, they can nevertheless devastate your GPA. Of course, there are plenty of other distractions already, but you can decrease at least this one by staying single in college.
College is a time to let loose, but that can be very hard to do when you have someone constantly looking over your shoulder. Being single will allow you to go out with your girlfriends and have a good time without jealous S.O.’s raining on your parade.
Chances are you and your S.O. will not be in the same place at the same time. If your partner is from your hometown, then he probably won’t be around during the school year. If you met them in college, then winter and summer breaks will probably be spent away from each other. Staying unattached will keep you from having that separation anxiety.
