70s Fashion Trends That Need To Come Back Today

We can learn a thing or two from 70s fashion. As with all decades, the 1970s had its fair share of some fashion mishaps but had mostly amazing trends that all vintage fashion-lovers can imitate today. Here are some 70s fashion trends that NEED to come back today!

Corduroy

This fabric material was once the biggest trend in the 1970s, rightfully so. Corduroy is known for its durability. It is also a versatile textile, found on many trousers, jackets, skirts, and even shirts! Slowly but surely, corduroy is once again coming back on the fashion scene. Corduroy can be worn in various different colors, but the camel color will always be the most iconic and fitting for those with a neutral, minimalistic wardrobe. Check out this not-so-modern take on corduroy high-waisted trousers from Anthropologie for some inspiration on how to rock this amazing textile today:

Ascots

Also known as neck scarves, ascots can add a pop of color and class to your entire outfit. There’s a reason why ladies of the 1970s gave into this fashion trend! Instead of wearing necklaces to accessorize, ascots can be an easier and cheaper way to breathe life into your normal every day outfit. You can easily draw attention to the neck area by wearing a monochrome outfit and accessorizing by quickly tying up a brightly colored ascot. See how this once plainly structured outfit now becomes the perfect background for the green neck scarf to shine!

Mood rings

I don’t know about you, but I remember mood rings as my favorite childhood accessory. Mood rings have been around since 1975, when its inventors combined liquid crystals with quartz stones. Mood rings are the staple 1970s fashion accessory, not only for kids! It’s a fun way to wear jewelry, which can also be a bonding moment between you and all your friends to check how you “feel” according to your warmth and the color-changing element of the mood rings. We definitely have to bring this playful and nostalgic piece back into our lives, not only by form of rings but also earrings, necklaces, you name it! This amazing mood ring from Urban Outfitters and other styles from Etsy can easily be added to your modern-day jewelry collection!

Disco jumpsuits

While jumpsuits are definitely back on trend in today’s fashion world, disco jumpsuits are another story. This 70s fashion trend was all the range in the age of disco clubs that emphasized all things  flashy, shiny, and glittery. I can imagine that these eye-catching disco jumpsuits helped reflect the light on the disco balls, making everything feel like a light dream. Most disco jumpsuits also emphasized a plunging neckline and a snatched waist, making it the perfect go-to outfit for a night out with your girls! This 70s fashion trend of wearing jumpsuits to the club is more efficient due to its mobility, unlike the more recent trend of today’s body-con dresses. Next time you plan to go out to the club, think about wearing a modern-take on disco jumpsuits such as this one from Akira:

Bell Bottoms

As the rise of thrifting and vintage clothing is slowly taking over trends of today’s fashion world, bell bottoms are still a 70s fashion trend that modern-day fashionistas are hesitant to pull-off. It’s not every day that you see someone with bell bottom jeans anymore, and they are surely hard to come by at your local retail jean store. Luckily, some vintage enthusiasts have slowly been incorporating their bell bottoms into their present day wardrobe by giving it a modern-day twist through various patterns like plaid or especially stripes which look flattering on almost everyone who gives it a try. Be fearless and bring back these curve-flattering, leg-lengthening high waisted bell bottoms!

Farrah Fawcett hair

Farrah Fawcett was the Hollywood bombshell actress of the 70s. Not only was she famous for her outstanding performance in the iconic Charlie’s Angels television series as Jill Munroe, but she was also widely-known for her perfectly voluminous hair! Although 70s-style hair could go very wrong, Farrah Fawcett definitely made it right. Her hair can easily be modernized today by taking the waves down a little and making it look less “blown” and more natural, yet still very voluminous and thick. Bangs (or fringes) are also a great way to bring back a 70s vintage look. Full, curtain bangs that are slightly parted such as these featured below will do the trick!

Kaftan/Caftan dresses

These elegant and long, vibrant patterned dresses are perfect to wear pool or beachside on your luxury vacation! You can also perfectly glide around the house with this 70s fashion trend, and feel like a regal queen as you lounge. Inspired by Moroccan culture, kaftan/caftan dresses are loose, long, and lightweight which is perfect for warmer weather. The many colorful and unique patterns kaftans can come in are endless, and you can effortlessly pair them with dangling earrings and your favorite sandals or wedges to complete this bohemian chic look!
