7 Tips to Start Your Summer Off Healthy

As the semester is coming to an end, students are most likely stressed and exhausted.  With summer right around the corner, make sure you are in the best shape to have an amazing break.  Here are some healthy ways to start the summer both physically and mentally!

1. Start a Journal

A journal can serve many different purposes, so it’s up to interpretation for the most beneficial way to use it.  You can use it to track health and fitness goals, to list goals and aspirations, to let go of emotions, or to just write whatever you feel.  Writing is the perfect way to express yourself and be creative. It is very good for your brain.

2. Cut Back on Social Media Usage

Although a large part of our society revolves around phones and social media, try cutting back on the amount of time spent on your phone this summer.  There are many other ways to spend your free time. Explore some new hobbies and find something you’re passionate about.  Focus on living in the moment rather than being absorbed by technology.

3. Stay Hydrated

It is necessary to stay hydrated, especially in the summer sun.  Water is the healthiest and most beneficial way to stay hydrated.  It helps with regulating energy levels, aids in weight loss, and helps to maintain healthy internal functions.  If you struggle with water consumption, try adding fruit to boost the flavor.  You can keep it simple by adding a slice of lemon, or you can be adventurous and mix two different fruits.  Be creative and experiment with different combinations to make staying hydrated even easier.  Your body will thank you in the future.

4. Stay Active

One of the best ways to be healthy is by staying active.  Find an activity outside that is enjoyable so you can take advantage of the warm weather and sunshine.  Whether this includes walking, running, riding a bike, or doing yoga, be sure to find an activity that is fun.  This will make it feel effortless to stay active.

5. Shop Locally

Instead of heading to the grocery store for food, try shopping locally to support local businesses.  Locally raised and grown food is healthier because it is more natural.  You are able to know exactly where your food came from.  They also have more ethical ways of caring for animals.  Many cities and towns have farmer’s markets with fresh fruits and vegetables during the summer. Be sure to stay informed about any opportunities to purchase fresh and healthy food.

6. Catch Some Z’s

After a long and stressful semester, it’s important to work towards regaining a regular sleep cycle.  It will help to reenergize and refuel your body to take on all of the summer activities that you may have planned.  A constant lack of sleep can result in weight gain and an increased chance for chronic diseases, such as heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes.  So make sure to catch up on sleep to have a healthy start to the summer.

As inspired by the popular show Parks and Recreation, be sure to treat yo self every once in a while, you deserve it.  This phrase can be applied to anything. So maybe you have a dessert or buy a new outfit.  It’s up for interpretation about how to treat yo self.  Be sure to reward your hard work and accomplishments.
