But with a college budget, it can be difficult to satisfy those seafood cravings while also maintaining your money. Shrimp is a perfect way to get that fresh salty flavor of the ocean without having to break your bank. Here are 5 shrimp recipes to give you the taste of the ocean.

1. Shrimp Ceviche 

This fresh recipe accentuates the natural sweetness of the shrimp meat balanced with the zing of lime juice. The white onion finishes it off with that special perfect crunch. When you’re craving something fresh and refreshing out of your shrimp, try out this recipe. 

Ingredients

  • 3 limes, juiced
  • 1 lb of shrimp, pre-cooked and deveined 
  • 1 white onion, peeled and chopped
  • 1 bag of tortillas chips of your choice
  • 3 sprigs of cilantro, chopped

Directions

Start by thawing out your shrimp, running them under room temp water helps speed up this process as well. While you’re waiting for your shrimp to thaw, dice your white onion and cilantro and set to the side. In a large bowl, add your shrimp, onion, cilantro and lime juice. Mix thoroughly, making sure your lime juice mixture is thoroughly coating the surface of the shrimp. Let sit for at least 30 minutes. Serve with your favorite tortilla chips and enjoy.

  • 1lb shrimp
  • 2 tbsp butter

  • 1 tsp red chili paste

  • 1 lemon, juiced
  • 1 sprig parsley, finely chopped
  • ¼ cup dry white wine

Directions

Begin by heating up your olive oil and butter in a large skillet over medium high heat. Add your shrimp and lightly saute for 3 to 4 minutes, until shrimp are thoroughly cooked through. Remove from heat and set to the side. Next, in the same skillet, add remaining olive oil and butter. Add in your minced garlic followed by your parsley. Stir and let simmer on low heat until the sauce begins to bubble. Add your shrimp to the mixture and cook over medium low heat for 1 minute. Remove from heat. Garnish with additional parsley and lemon. Stir. Serve and enjoy.

  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 2 tbsp dill pickle relish
  • 2 tsp capers, chopped
  • 2 tsp Tabasco 
  • 1 ½ tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard

  • 2 garlic cloves, minced

Fried Shrimp

  • 3 large pinches salt
  • 2 large pinches paprika
  • 1 pinch cayenne pepper
  • 1 pinch garlic powder
  • 2 lbs raw shrimp, peeled, deveined and tails off
  • Canola oil for frying
  • 1 ½ cups flour
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 3 tbsp tabasco

For the sandwich

  • 4 long french loaves split horizontally
  • Dill pickles
  • Sliced tomatoes
  • Shredded iceberg lettuce

Directions

Begin by mixing your ingredients of the remoulade sauce and let chill in your refrigerator until you are preparing your shrimp. Combine your spice mixture and divide it in half. Season the shrimp with one portion of the spices. Next, mix the flour and cornmeal and the remaining spices together in a mixing bowl. Then, in a separate mixing bowl, add your buttermilk and hot sauce together. Lightly dip your shrimp in the buttermilk mixture then coat in flour, shaking off the excess. Chill the battered shrimp in the fridge for 20 minutes. Pour your frying oil into a deep wide pan, about 2 inches worth, coating the bottom of the pan. Heat your oil to 350F. Working in small batches, fry your shrimp until a beautiful golden brown, about 3 to 4 minutes. Transfer to a paper towel lined plate and pat dry. Assemble your sandwich on your french bread, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles and fried shrimp. Serve while hot.
