When you’re craving the hearty comfort of pub food but don’t want to break your budget, it can be hard to find that perfect medium. Yet with a restricted budget and pub food cravings, you only have one choice, to make it yourself. Sounds daunting right? It doesn’t have to be! Here are 5 pub recipes that will leave you wanting more.

This recipe is perfect for dinner parties or a snack!

1. Pub Fries

Pub fries are the ultimate comfort when it comes to any pub food setting. This dish is great to share with family and friends while also being a cheesy treat for you! The textures of the french fries with soft gooey cheese and the crunch of onion make this a perfect pub food. 

Ingredients

  • 12 slices of bacon, cooked
  • 2 pounds of potatoes of your choice
  • 1 tbsp butter, melted
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1 pinch garlic powder
  • 1 pinch smoked paprika
  • 4 ounces of sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 4 ounces of Manchego cheese, shredded
  • 2 scallions, chopped
  • 1 dollop sour cream

Directions

First, cook your bacon and set the side. Preheat your oven to 425F. Cut your potatoes into wedges. Try and keep them all the same size! Next, place your wedges into a large bowl with your leftover bacon fat, butter, salt, garlic powder and paprika. Toss and make sure your wedges are thoroughly coated. Next, pour your potatoes onto a baking pan and roast for 15 minutes, making sure you flip and roast for another 10 to 15 minutes. Then, remove your wedges from the heat and arrange them in a mound, covering them in cheese and bacon. Place back into the pan or baking dish and melt in your oven for about 2 to 3 minutes. Serve and enjoy. 

This cheesy mac is perfect when you want to take this comfort food to the next level.

2. Three Cheese Mac n Cheese

This recipe is a must try for any mac n cheese lover. If you’re looking to step up your mac and cheese game, pub three cheese mac n cheese is guaranteed to wow you. And while this mac n cheese defies the traditional, it’s intense cheesy flavors are well worth the try. 

Ingredients

  • ½ stick of butter
  • 1 package elbow macaroni
  • ½ cup flour
  • 5 cups of whole milk
  • 1 ½ tsp salt
  • 1 pinch black pepper
  • 1 tsp mustard
  • 3 cups of cheddar, shredded
  • 2 cups Gruyere, shredded
  • 1 ½ cup grated Parmesan
  • 1 cup panko bread crumbs
  • 3 dashes olive oil
  • Parsley, chopped

Directions

Preheat your oven to 375F. Butter your baking dish. Next, in a large pot, cook your macaroni according to the instructions on the package. In a large saucepan, melt your 1 stick of butter, while sprinkling in your flour. Cook until slightly golden. This should take around 2 to 3 minutes. Next, pour in your milk and whisk until fully combined. Remove the pan from heat and mix in your three cheeses. Continue stirring until it is smooth. Then, transfer over to the baking dish. In a small bowl, take remaining parmesan and panko, mixing it with oil. Lightly sprinkle the mixture over the macaroni and season with your pepper. Bake until bubbling, about 25 to 30 minutes. Garnish with your parsley and let set for 10 minutes. Serve and enjoy.

3. Four Cheese Burgers

This burger is the epitome of juicy and decadent. If you’re looking to take your burgers to the next level, this recipe is a must try. A four cheese burger is perfect to satisfy that pub craving without breaking your budget. 

Ingredients

  • ½ cup milk
  • 2 slices of sourdough bread, crust removed
  • 700 grams of beef, minced
  • 100 grams of speck, trimmed and chopped
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 green onion, chopped
  • 1 pinch nutmeg
  • ¼ cup grated parmesan
  • ¼ cup grated pecorino
  • 4 slices fontina cheese
  • 4 slices manchego cheese
  • 4 brioche burger buns, lightly toasted
  • 1 cluster lettuce leaves
  • 2 heirloom tomatoes, sliced
  • 2 pickles,sliced
  • 1 dash bbq sauce
  • 1 dash hot sauce
  • Chips to serve

Directions

Place your milk in a medium mixing bowl. Add your bread and allow to soak for 5 minutes. Gently squeeze your bread and discard the leftover milk. Transfer bread over to a large bowl with minced meat, speck, egg, onion, chives, nutmeg and your cheeses. Season and use your hands to stir and combine. Next, divide up your meat mixture into four patties. Place on a plate and cover, let chill for 30 minutes. This will allow the meat to firm up before you cook it. Next, heat up your chargrill or medium high heat on a stove. Cook your patties for 4 to 5 minutes on each side. Top with your fontina and manchego cheese. Cover with a lid and let the cheese melt for 1 minute. Spread your bbq sauce on the bun bases then top with lettuce, burger patties, tomatoes and pickles.Cover your bun with lids to warm up.  Serve and enjoy.

4. Chicken schnitzel with jalapeño and mustard and mayo

This unique dish offers that perfect combination of crunch, spice and sweet fat. The crunch and kick of the jalapeno and chicken is beautifully balanced with the soft bite of mustard and the cooling of the mayo. If you’re looking to wow your guests with your pub cooking prowess, try this recipe out. 

Ingredients

  • 4 chicken breasts
  • 1 cup flour
  • 2 pinches paprika
  • 4 ½ cups bread crumbs
  • ½ cup dill, chopped
  • ½  sage, chopped
  • ½  parsley, chopped
  • 1 grated lemon zest
  • ⅔ cup parmesan, grated
  • 3 eggs
  • Grapeseed oil to fry

Spicy Mayo Mixture

  • 1 ½ tsp Dijon mustard
  • 2 tbsp pickled jalapenos, chopped
  • 2 chives,chopped

Directions

Preheat your oven to 356F. Place your chicken breasts on a baking sheet or baking dish. Using a meat mallet, or rolling pin, tenderize your chicken until 1 cm thick. Next, combine your flour, paprika, breadcrumbs, herbs, lemon zest, parmesan and salt. Lightly beat your eggs in another bowl and coat your chicken in the flour mixture. Dip your chicken in your egg then coat in your bread crumbs. Place on the tray and let chill for 30 minutes. Next, combine your mayo ingredients. Heat up a large frying pan with oil on medium high heat. Cook for 5 to 6 minutes on each side. Remove from the pan and pat with a paper towel. Keep warm in the oven. Plate with your mayo mixture. Serve and enjoy.

5. Rib eye with anchovy butter and roasted cauliflower

This recipe is perfect for when you’re looking for a little decadence in your life. And while this recipe is more expensive than the others, the flavors of the rich rib-eye coupled with the anchovy butter are well worth it. 

Ingredients

  • 1 ml olive oil
  • 4 rib-eyes
  • ½ bunch parsley
  • 1 grated lemon for zest
  • Basile leaves, to serve
  • 1 lemon, juiced

Anchovy butter

  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 3 anchovies in oil, drained
  • 2 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 2 tbsp capers, rinsed
  • ¼ cup basil, chopped
  • ½ lemon juiced

Directions

Preheat your oven to 428F. Arrange your cauliflower in a single layer in a baking dish and drizzle lightly with olive oil. Season and roast for 45 minutes. We are looking for them to be golden and charred here. Meanwhile, mix all ingredients to make your anchovy butter. Heat your stove top on medium high heat and lightly brush your steaks with oil. Season accordingly. Cook for 6 minutes on each side. Remove from heat and let rest for 5 minutes. Then, toss your cauliflower with parsley and lemon zest and juice. Plate to your liking. Serve and enjoy.
