5 Lipstick Shades You Should Own

Lipstick, in my opinion, is the finishing touch to a makeup look. Your lipstick choice can change your look from day to night, and in some cases, many will only wear lipstick and light foundation for their look. Whether you are going for a full face, want a quick layer of color to your pucker, or looking to draw attention to your pout in a dramatic way, there are five lipstick shades you should own and have in your go-to makeup kit.

1. Perfect Nude (Skin Tones, Dark, Light, Pinks)

Nude lipstick is a must-have for anyone’s lipstick shades collection. Nudes have a vast arrangement of colors; some nudes have pink tones, brown tones, and other various tones found in the spectrum of colors. Some colors can nearly match your skin’s pigmentation, and there are colors you can choose that are darker than your skin tone. The perfect nude doesn’t have to be matte either; you can choose a gloss or shimmer and add a bit of flair to a more understated look. Another thing that is great to keep in mind is that nudes can tone down a darker sultry eye look, but it can also be a dramatic statement if you go with a darker nude or a very light nude. Depending on what you are going for, a nude can be just as impactful as a red or deep berry color but doesn’t feel like you are too risky with your overall choices. That’s right; your nude choices can be a great statement for your overall look. There are endless choices for matte lipsticks; my personal favorite is Too Faced Melted Matte Liquid Lipstick in color My Type. My Type is a light pinky shade and goes well with just about any skin tone.

2. Wine Stained Pucker (Berry, Purple, Burgandy, Aubergine)

Wine colors may have purple and red in them; they can range from a darker berry color to a deep plum red. These lipstick shades are great alternatives for someone who wants to compliment a more dramatic eye look or opt-out of the vintage red pout. Often these colors are referred to as bitten lip tones. What is excellent about these wine colors is that they look great on various skin tones and complement an array of makeup looks and ensembles. If you are looking for cool-toned dark lipstick, the power bullet series in the color Masquerade by Huda is a great choice. This lipstick is an aubergine color and will make quite the statement!

3. Vintage Red (Red/Red-Orange)

Red lips are a classic. We often think of pin-up styles and how much of a statement the color red can make. Imagine a simple eye makeup, perhaps a cat-eye eyeliner with a perfect wing, hints of blush and mascara, or false lashes. Finishing your look off with a red will make your look pop and draw attention to your pucker. Having red lips with a lighter face makeup is a preferred choice by many, but that doesn’t mean you cannot have a more dolled-up dramatic or smokey eye if you so choose. Red lipstick is a must-have for any lipstick shades collection! If you are looking for a beautiful red, try Beauty Bakerie Matte Lip Whip in Mon Chéri. If you prefer a slightly different hue of red, try Beauty Bakerie Matte Lip Whip in Bowl of Cherries. These two reds are perfect for anyone and scream classic.

4. The Perfect Brown

A great brown can do wonders for your look or create a statement. While brown can potentially classify under the nude colors, browns can range from light to dark on the borderline of black. Some browns have hints of red tones in them, which can be a perfect pair for your makeup look or ensemble. If you are not fond of red, you may find the brown to be more up your alley. Browns can glam up a simple look and make your lips stand out if you want to do an understated eye look. The perfect brown can be perfect for you! For a great brown color, try the Dose of Colors (Dose) in Chocolate Wasted.

5. Pink Pout (Coral)

Pink can be light to vibrant. Colors such as coral are often found in the pink spectrum, and depending on what you like for your skin tone and what you plan to have for makeup or clothing, a pink color may be the perfect statement choice. There are vibrant pinks such as hot pink, but lighter shades and corals look more natural if you prefer. Not everyone wants a color that stands out or is over the top, so choosing a pink that you feel compliments your skin tone and your style is what is best. I love pinks because you do not have to wear a full face of makeup; sometimes, just putting on a quick layer of pink lipstick is all you need to feel complete! Overall, everyone needs a great pink that they feel showcases their best selves. There are many brands and colors of pink on the market; if you are looking for a lovely color that is not too extreme, try Mac’s Lipstick/Botanic Panic in color La-Di-Dahila for a lovely mid-tone pink shade.

There are hundreds of tones and hues to choose from when it comes to lipstick shades. Not only do you have to consider what lipstick shades to get, but you have to decide if you prefer a glossy look, a matte look, or a shimmer. While those can be challenging, it is a great idea to start with the five shades you should own. Once you find the lipstick shades you like best in those five sections, you can start getting the colors in various applications to suit your needs. Don’t be afraid to try new shades and different types of variations. I have colors I love in gloss, shimmer, metallics, and mattes. All the variations change up your look and style, and all it takes is a quick swipe of color on your lips to feel like a whole new you! Be bold, be daring, and most importantly, be you!
