St. John’s University offers a large number of activities to its students, but some of these activities (in my humble opinion) are more important than others. Keep reading for the top 4 things you MUST experience at SJU!

1. Plunge

Experience a service immersion program in a big city.

Some people aren’t religious, and some people aren’t into volunteer work. For Plunge Programs, that doesn’t matter. Even though, yes, the programs include aspects of both of faith and service, a plunge is so much more than that. I went on the freshman plunge in New York City and I still tell people about it (obviously, I’m telling you here). It was incredible experience to give back to my future home and get to know the area I would be a part of for the next four years. The bonds you create with people with on plunges are incredible, because you get to know each other on an entirely new level. For a whole week, you eat, sleep and serve with fellow students by your side and you experience things that you won’t ever get outside of a plunge. Side note: SJU offers many more places than just NYC, including Denver, Panama, and Lourdes just to name a few.

2. Networking Event or Career Fair

Meet people that might be able to help you out in the future.

You wouldn’t believe the connections that you can get through St. John’s. I have met other people who work in my industry simply because we both went to networking events. Your university is going to be the BIGGEST ‘in’ with just about anything, so who knows.. you might even find a job! Lucky for us, we don’t have to look very far for these connections, because SJU sets up events for us. Our only responsibility is to attend if we are interested. I recently went to a networking day put on by Ad Club and PRSSA. This event featured panels of professors and recent graduates in the field that would answer questions. They were so excited to see that people cared enough about their future careers to show up on a Saturday morning. You get out of St. John’s what you put in, so it’s worth putting in effort.

3. Spring Carnival

Now onto the fun stuff!

SJU has its own carnival every single year. You can’t miss it; this year included rides on the Great Lawn, free food, and even an alpaca. The Carnival happens towards the end of the year, so it’s really helpful for lightening the mood and stress before spring finals begin. Overall, the Carnival is a great way to spend time with friends and appreciate the nice weather… before the hellish two weeks of study days and Finals.

4. Tipoff

Get hyped up for basketball season.

Even if you don’t know (or like) the artist, Tipoff is always a good idea. Every other school has football; we have basketball. Tipoff isn’t only about going to a concert with everyone at SJU, but it’s also about supporting your team. It is about coming together as a school (as weird as that may sound in context with a concert). This is the St. John’s equivalent to Homecoming, and everything that week, including Tipoff, is meant to hype everyone up for the upcoming season. I think it does a pretty good job! Tipoff is the main reason I don’t mind not having a football team. We work with what we have… and we have a great time doing it.
