The 2000s might have been a past of cringe-worthy fashion and beauty moments for some, but the decade is slowly making a comeback with some tweaks and new school renditions for the 2020s. As we begin anew for the next several years to come, let’s take a trip down memory lane of the hottest hairstyles and hair trends the 2000s had to offer. From crimped hair to streaks, the ’00s were all about being unforgettable and starting the millennium off right. Let’s take a page from the 20-year-old book and make a mark this decade. Here is a list of 2000s hair trends for the 2020s!
You can’t speak of the 2000s without mentioning chunky highlights. This hair trend was rampant during the decade and was fashioned by many celebrities, such as the Olson twins and Kelly Clarkson. The look basically accentuated your natural hair color through contrasting and “chunky” streaks through lowlighting and highlighting techniques. For this decade, however, chunky highlights will only frame our face by highlighting towards the front and keeping the streaks a couple of shades lighter than our natural hair color. No more funky colors and chunky highlights everywhere. This will keep things minimal but noticeable at the same time.
A y2k fashion hair trend that everyone seemed to love and get creative with were butterfly clips. This particular hair accessory was worn by the popular girl, the girl next door, tweens, video vixens, celebrities, etc. Literally everyone! There was just something majestic about the clips, not to mention they gave volume and pizzazz to any outfit you had in your closet. Butterfly clips in the 2020s will hopefully incite new creative ways to clip all hair textures and cuts that will blow our minds. They are super accessible and wearing them makes you feel one of a kind.
The 2000s was undoubtedly the golden age of blonde hair. Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, Christina Aguilera, Jessica Simpson, and Gwen Stefani are some names that come to mind. Even shows like The Simple Life and Legally Blonde made their debut during the decade and had a vast cultural influence on women at the time. For the 2020s, bringing back shades like platinum blonde, peachy blonde, honey blonde, and barbie blonde hair will definitely spice things up. This time we’ll have better practices in achieving these shades (without damaging the hair) as well as a variety of different hair textures rocking the look.
Similar to the 80s, the millennium was obsessed with glittery clothes, makeup, and hair. However, the 2000s truly outdid their predecessors by bejeweling everything–even their hair! Socialites like Paris Hilton and pop star Mandy Moore were known to put crystals in their hair, a hair trend that almost acted as a tiara when placed down the center part or scattered everywhere to add a twinkle to their strands. The look has already made an appearance in recent years, with a more elegant and minimal approach to the trend.
If you didn’t crimp your hair at least once, you definitely missed out on an essential and pivotal 2000s experience. No worries, though, because the look is definitely coming back. While super crimped hair rendered super cringed feels, crimped waves during the decade was also a trend, notably rocked by vocalist and entertainer Beyoncé. The subtlety of this crimped look gave beach wave vibes, as well as feminine locs that appeared flattering on all face shapes. This is definitely a hair trend that mustn’t be slept on.
Another subtle hair trend from the ’00s was textured hair. This ubiquitous haircut was especially popular for men but an incredible look for all genders, nonetheless. Unlike a layered hairstyle, textured hair is uniform and removes weight from the hair. It’s genuinely a haircut that marries the concepts of casual and effort. Today, the textured bob provides that elegantly messy aesthetic people love.
Remember when Lauren Conrad always wore that plastic black headband on The Hills and then everyone started wearing a black headband? Blair Waldorf–the Queen of Headbands–wore her fair share on Gossip Girl at the time too. Needless to say, it was a huge hair trend that I think needs to come back. This time, though, instead of plastic, let’s do a silk/satin black headband; a better option for our hair that provides a different type of shine. Black literally goes with everything and headbands are just, well, everything.
Side fringes were definitely a hair craze in the 2000s, but it was the late songstress and 90s icon Aaliyah that made the side fringe the ultimate look right before the turn of the century. Her side bang influenced a new decade of individuals, as it gave an air of mystery and unique feminine energy to people’s looks. Today, channeling this Aaliyah inspired hair trend is a youthful and sexy way to experiment with your hair if you want to try something new.
If you weren’t wearing a headband, you most definitely wore a bandana in the 2000s. Bandanas were the perfect hair accessories that also served as tops and ties. This was the cool-girl aesthetic piece and people got really creative with the paisley pattern at the time. If there is something the 2000s did right, it was wearing a bandana. The 2020s will ride on this hair trend, with everyone you know rocking their very own paisley scarf.
For those with curly and coily locs, protective styles that are cute and effective are essential and micro braids were amongst the most popular in the 2000s. Braid royalty Brandy Norwood, Beyoncé, and Alicia Keys were a few Black women that had micro braids and were truly breathtaking and glowing with the hairstyle. While loose-ended micro braids and long micro braids were the trends, today there are numerous different styles and colors to choose from. From platinum and purple micro braids to wearing the protective style in a bob or an extravagant bun.
Two-toned hair has made a resurgence in 2020 and it isn’t long before this specific hair trend will make its mark on the decade. The brown under bleach blonde hair was once a horrifying 2000s hair trend, however, the brown on bleach edition of the look might be a sight for sore eyes. The turnaround of hair color roles actually looks more flattering and is a 2020 take on the millennium trend. Bleach on brown but flip it and reverse it.
