20 Things I Learned as a Freshman at UOP

Freshman year is both exciting and daunting. Why wouldn’t it be? Don’t worry, you’re in good hands and you chose a great university. Keep reading 20 Things I Learned as a Freshman at UOP for 20 tips!

1. Don’t use the trays!

Despite the fact there are stacks of cafeteria trays for you to use at UOP, hardly anyone uses them. If you spy someone holding one, usually that means they are either a visitor, or an uninformed freshman.

2. Actually attend office hours.

Not only will you get your questions answered, you’ll get to know the professor and the professor will get to know you. It’s also not a bad idea to try and find someone who can provide a nice letter of recommendation.

3. Skateboards are everywhere.

Penny boards, nickel boards, long boards, you’ll see plenty of students riding them around campus so watch out when you’re walking!

4. The cafeteria, or also known as the UC, is also a great place to study.

There are plenty of tables and comfy chairs in the UC and is brightly lit during the day and night. There is a little bit of white noise, but nevertheless, is still one of many favorites for studying at.

5. Go on a Tiger Escape Trip!

Take a weekend off to go somewhere outside of Stockton. From camping to hiking to a ropes course, there’s bound to be at least one trip you’ll be interested in.

6. Regularly check your email.

Announcements, notifications, and communication all reside in your gmail account UOP provides you.

7. Plan ahead for Study Abroad.

If you’re interested in studying overseas, you’ll want to start planning early with your teacher advisor. That way you have a plan to follow and can avoid any complications along the way.

8. Attend school events.

Not only will you have fun but there will usually be free items (like shirts or scarves) and free food!

9. Attend your dorm events.

Your RAs host events in your dorm. It would be nice for them to see their residents to go down and enjoy what they provide. This can range from arts-and-crafts to move nights.

10. Know your RA.

Besides attending their events, get to know your RA. They are there to help you with whatever you need, whether it be getting locked out of your room or just getting advice.

11. Security on patrol.

During the night time you may end up seeing some security officials stroll through your dorm hallways. Don’t worry, they’re just walking by to make sure you’re safe. If anything, smile and say hi. They are quite friendly!

12. Use the tutoring center.

UOP provides a tutoring center free of charge. Take advantage of it and don’t be hesitate to make an appointment if you need some extra help with any subject.

13. Use your meal plan wisely.

Some people use more, some use less of their meal plan. Either way, make sure you stick with the weekly amount to finish up on time. (You can roll over 300 meal points from the fall to spring semester only).

14. Contact your student advisor.

Every freshman has a student advisor. They are there to help you choose your classes, answer your questions, and give advice.

15. Look ahead of time for your classroom.

What many freshman fear is not knowing where your classroom is and ending up in the wrong one. Start off day number one by knowing exactly where all your classes are!

16. Call STRIPES.

This is an escort service provided for University of the Pacific students that is open 7 days a week. If you’re by yourself at night and have to get from point A to B, call the STRIPES number and they will take you there and back.

17. You should attend class.

Although not all classes will require attendance, it would be best for you to still go to class. Some professors might give tips on what will be on the next test!

18. Don’t fall behind on your assignments!

Although college means having more time on your own and less in a classroom setting, that doesn’t mean to wait until you have a large stack of assignments on your desk for you to finish. Stay on top of things and use your time wisely. It will save you a lot of stress and more importantly, sleep!

19. Go to the gym.

It’s free for all students and they also have classes and trainers. There is even indoor rock climbing!

20. Enjoy freshman year!

It’s your freshman year in college and that doesn’t come every day. Go out, make friends, and create new memories!
