20 Things Every UIW Student Should Know
If you are a student attending UIW at the moment or will be in the fall, you should probably keep reading for 20 things every UIW student should know!
1. No one is safe from the Ticket Master.
No, I’m not saying that UIW gives out free movie tickets, (although you can get them discounted in the student center). I’m referring to the blonde haired, red polo wearing man who receives pleasure from issuing unnecessary parking tickets at very inconvenient times! No car is safe from his wrath!

2. Good luck being on time!
If you attend UIW you can depend on not depending on the shuttle service being timely, especially when you’re in a time crunch. So put on your walking shoes, take the elevator, and start your journey from the hill to main campus.
3. Did I mention the elevator?
Yeah… the elevator, providing those that live on the hill the service of being able to descend down the hill, is very sketchy. Every-time you step foot in that thing, it shakes and squeals. Many times it has stopped with students still enjoying the ride in mid air.

4. What Greek Life?
Even though UIW does offer greek life, which I have even considered rushing for, many students are disappointed. A large part of the African American students feel that they are not represented.

5. I’m hungry…nevermind.
I think every student can agree that food is the main source that gets them through the day, right? Well not here. All surrounding colleges have Pizza Hut and Subway and we are stuck with 5 options from Chic-Fil-A and a Starbucks that doesn’t even provide almond milk. It’s safe to say that our eating choices are very…very limited.

6. Never a dull moment.
I can’t remember the last time I was blessed with hearing peace and quiet outside my class window. Every month there is a new project erupting out of nowhere with obnoxious hammering noises to match. Of course, these renovations will help our school look better but most of them won’t be finished until I graduate so I don’t really care.
7. Nothing is in walking distance.
You would think businesses would be jumping at the chance to own a shop down the street from campus, but sadly, they are not. The sad thing with our university being surrounded by older people is that everything closes at 9 PM and nothing holds our attention. The closest store to us is CVS (which was built because UIW sold that land which we should’ve used for dorms,) and isn’t open 24 hours. Which means it isn’t for me!
8. Wifi, Wifi, Wifi…
All I have to say is that it drops way too often to be supporting a school of over 9,000 students all trying to turn in assignments before midnight.

9. The Chipotle scandal.
If you’re a Chipotle lover and you didn’t know this fun fact I’m about to share with you, I suggest you take a seat. Trinity University, whose campus is located across the highway, it granted the use of their meal points at Chipotle. While us at the University of the Incarnate Word literally share the same street and have to pay an extra 50 cent for guac!

10. Our newsworthy stories.
Has anyone else noticed that every year we are in the news for less than positive reasons? Last semester we had helicopters circling our campus trying to help us find the “shooter” on campus. But I digress…
11. The crazy cafe hours.
THE CAFE IS NEVER OPEN WHEN I AM HUNGRY. That is all.

12. Dreaming of dorm life?
Dreaming of dorm life? Well wake up! UIW is letting in more and more students each year without finding new places to house them. In fact, we lost multiple housing locations within this year. I’m a little salty about this because up until the week before the 2015-2016 school year started, I thought I would be living in a hotel 2 miles from campus. Thank goodness they “found room for me” *rolls eyes*.

13. Forced religion.
With me being raised Christian and in private school throughout most of my life, I personally have no problem with having to take a religion course. However, I do see the frowning faces of students of every major when they learn that in order to graduate you MUST receive credit in at least one religion course. For some, that’s torture.
14. Spring break losers.
Of course, everyone enjoys the downtime we get from spring break. But the heavy party-goers may not like that we have one of the lamest weeks assigned for spring break. Some spring break groups leave a week earlier just to catch the “good crowd”.
15. “Iffy” security.
I’ll just say they are very iffy and leave it at that.

16. Study Sesh.
You and your friends want to form a big study group? Cool, I hope the odds are in your favor for receiving one of the six study rooms provided by the library.

17. Did you know we had a football team?!
I bet most of you think I’m going to take a crack at our team but I’m not. Last season was amazing for them! Records were broken and established, victories were earned, and if we were eligible we would’ve qualified for the Bowl Game! But I bet half of y’all wouldn’t know that because whenever I attended the games the stands were EMPTY! This is a public service announcement for all students; show some love and head out to the games next season! 54 will be playing so that’s a plus!
18. Campus Activities
There’s not much of a social aspect on campus. It’s been hard ever since the Student Center was destroyed, which was where most events would take place. Now our events are usually in parking lots and people only show up for the T-shirts then leave.

19. Our President is Pretty Cool
The president of UIW is actually really cool. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting him before and it was a fun experience. The way he talks to his assistant is funny and he’s never shy of a joke!

20. I Guess We’re All Right
The last thing we should all know and remember is that we’re an alright school. Even with all the complaints we share, we’re still able to earn a degree and further our education whereas some people in the world can’t even afford to stay in high school. Sometimes, we should dismiss alllllllllllll the negative things about our school and focus on the good!
