20 Reasons A Trip To Italy Should Be On Your Bucket List

This past summer, I had the pleasure of taking a trip to Italy with my family. Immediately, I was immersed within the rich culture, history and language. I enjoyed eating nothing but pizza and pasta while roaming the thinly-lined streets, surveying the local shops and documenting my adventure. If you need any more convincing on whether to make a trip to Italy, here are 20 very convincing reasons…

1. The Grand Canal in Venice

This canal truly is grand – it connects all of the other waterways within the city of Venice. While riding on a gondola or vaporetto (water taxi), you’ll get the chance to see famous Rialto Bridge, old churches, and even the building where George Clooney got married!

2. The Trevi Fountain in Rome

Shouldn’t we all be allowed a Lizzie McGuire moment once in our lives? This fountain is breathtakingly beautiful – and a little difficult to find among all the backstreets. Finding it can be an adventure all on its own; and making a wish will become a memory you will cherish forever.

3. Michelangelo’s Masterpieces

Whether it be Moses in Rome or the Statue of David in Florence, Michelangelo’s pieces are highly valued within Italian culture. His works have been imitated around the world, but seeing the original masterpieces in person is a once in a lifetime experience for most.

4. The Sistine Chapel

The Sistine Chapel was also designed by Michelangelo, but is so wonderful, it deserves its own separate reason to take trip to Italy. The detail put into this building is exquisite. Standing in silence will allow you to take everything in and treasure the moment.

5. The Colosseum

The Colosseum is one of the most recognized attractions in history, so obviously it’s a must during a trip to Italy! It is bigger than you could ever imagine! When visiting, you’ll learn about gladiator fights and the whole building process.

6. The Vatican

Did you know that the Vatican is named its own state? Some of the coolest features within Vatican City include the Pope’s Balcony, the Holy Doors, and the Gallery of Maps.

7. Town of Assisi

One of the top reasons to take a trip to Italy is an adorable little place called Assisi. This quaint little town in the heart of central Italy is the birthplace of St. Francis. It has some of the best scenic views in all of Italy, and is home to many ruins and Basilicas.

8. The gelato

Trust me when I say you haven’t lived until you’ve tried gelato. I ate it every day while in Italy and I do not regret it all! Your taste buds will thank you. FOODIES, I’m talking to you: this is the number 1 reason to take a trip to Italy 😉

9. The street art

Art is cherished within Italy’s culture, and street art is no exception. Engaging with street artists will help you practice your language skills, and bartering for a street painting is a thrilling experience!

10. The Catacombs

If you are an adrenaline junky – this activity is right up your alley! Exploring ancient burial tombs in the dark, damp underground may not be for everyone, but I certainly recommend it for anyone that wants to experience an eerily cool part of Italian history.

11. Doge’s Palace

This palace was home to the leader of the Republic of Venice, located in the San Marco Piazza. There are many rooms inside that house the coat of arms, paintings and sculptures. Through Doge’s Palace, you will have access to pass through the Bridge of Sighs, as it was the last view that criminals had before they were imprisoned.

12. The islands of Murano, Torcello, and Burano

A great day trip in Italy consists of visiting the three islands across the Lagoon in Venice. You can witness a glass-blowing tutorial on Murano, sit on Attila’s throne on Torcello, and learn about lace-making while admiring the colorful buildings of Burano. Yeah, I’d say that’s pretty good reason to take a trip to Italy!

13. The antique souvenirs

There are lots of souvenir shops located throughout Italy, but I recommend finding the local ones near your hotel. You can buy Carnival masks, Italian soccer jerseys, and even Gladiator swords for a fraction of the tourist prices!

14. The Amalfi Coast

The Amalfi Coast is one of the most picturesque and breathtaking destinations in the world – and a good enough reason on its own for many to book a trip to Italy. A great way to experience all that this spot has to offer is to hike along the mountainside or soak up the sun on one of the many beaches.

15. Shopping in Milan

Milan is Italy’s main business and fashion district, so shopping here will not disappoint. Especially during the summer and winter seasons, much of Europe offers enormous sales where you can purchase designer clothing and accessories for a bargain.

The Tower is one of Europe’s most famous icons – but is well worth the visit. If you’re willing to climb up almost 300 steps, you’ll get the chance to experience magnificent views of the Tuscan countryside.

The Forum developed as the city center as the Roman Empire developed. It’s astonishing to see the mixture of ancient architecture with more modern influences around the Forum and Colosseum.

Verona is not only the birthplace of Romeo and Juliet, but also the home of Renaissance art. It is a quaint providence full of beauty and romance, and is a great destination in order to get away from the large city crowds.

Surprisingly, Italy has over 10,000 documented caves hidden inside mountains and sea grottos. Exploring a cavern is an extraordinary way to appreciate the beauty of Italian nature.

Italians definitely know how to eat, drink and be merry. Whether you’re staying for a couple of days or for an extended period of time, your neighbors will provide you with great service and hospitality, so that you can feel as though you’re part of the family.
