20 Reasons Why Ohio State University Is The Absolute Best

Not only are we one of the largest schools in the country, but we have an amazing social scene and a reputation for great football and academics. Ready to find out what makes Ohio State the best of the best? Here are 20 reasons why THE Ohio State University is THE best school in the Midwest, if not the nation.

1. We’re Better Than Michigan (Obviously)

Ohio State has continued to prove itself to be better than Michigan. In football, we have beaten them for the past five years straight. We have “The Best Damn Band in the Land.” We have original foods, like Skyline Chili. And to top all that, Ohio is just prettier in general. TTUN just can’t keep up with us.

2. We’re Located in Columbus, OH

Columbus is the capital of and the largest city in Ohio. We have one of the largest student bodies in the nation at just under 60,000! We also have headquarters to major retail companies such as Limited Brands’ Victoria’s Secret, Bath and Body Works, and Abercrombie and Fitch. With these top brands located in our city, there are endless opportunities for careers after graduation.

3. Great Football Program

Ohio State has a highly respected football program, led by coach Urban Meyer (DILF!!!). They took home the National Championship in 2014, have had ten undefeated seasons, 37 conference championships, and 7 Heisman Trophy winners. Yeah, we’re kinda a big deal.

4. Football Block and Tailgates

Ohio State is known for having some of the best and wildest tailgates. Fans travel from all across Ohio to tailgate on game days. Outside the Shoe, Lane Ave is filled up and down with tailgates. For students, we attend block, where some of the top fraternities host tailgates in their lots. Natty Light, Four Lokos, and Champagne are always provided and you will most likely leave covered in one of these substances. Free alcohol, music, and elevated surfaces make for a great tailgate every Saturday. Block is a one-of-a-kind experience you can only get at Ohio State.

5. Five Star Academics

Enough about tailgates, Ohio State is serious about their academics. They have many highly accredited colleges including: Fisher College of Business, College of Engineering, and College of Medicine. The quality of education here is astounding for the moderate price of tuition.

6. The Dining Hall Food is Actually Bomb

Scott Traditions on North Campus is now the go-to spot to eat. They have an Asian and Mongolian grill, and omelet, Spanish, and Italian stations. Also, the Union Market has many amazing options. In the Union, is Sloopy’s, which is similar to a Steak n Shake. Honestly, the on-campus food options are endless and you’ll never go hungry.

7. Amazing Gym Facilities

Ohio States Rec Center (Rpac) is huge with many different levels, pools, and sports courts, indoor and outdoor. Also, they have tasty smoothies and acai bowls you can eat after workouts or in between class! The North Rec Center is a new addition this year. The rec centers offer FREE fitness classes like yoga, circuit cycle, and pilates. They are taught by fellow students so the classes are actually fun too! Definitely hit these up if you need a real kick in the ass. These were my go-to for getting in shape before spring break.

8. Greek Life

Greek life at Ohio State is perfect. You get all the amazing social benefits of being in a fraternity or sorority, without all the pressure they have in southern greek life. They won’t judge you off your parent’s net worth, if you’re a legacy or not, or your physical appearance. you don’t have to “have it all” to be in a top frat or sorority. You never know how amazing greek life is at Ohio State until you join and get to attend the endless frat pairings, date parties, and themed gatherings.

9. There is Every Kind of Club You Could Imagine

Ohio State has over 1,300 clubs and student organizations. You can find your niche through a variety of activities in these clubs. We have a gun club that meets once a week at a shooting range (dope af), fashion forward, bass fishing, salsa dancing, and mountaineers club. Literally anything you can think of, there is a club for it.

10. Easton Mall

Easton Mall, the largest mall in Ohio, is also located 20 min from OSU’s campus. There’s amazing restaurants and shopping, perfect for a date night or girl’s night out. They have every store you could possibly need.

11. Short North

The Short North is located on High Street, which connects downtown Columbus and Ohio State’s campus. Short North is a colorful and trendy area filled with amazing restaurants, coffee shops, shopping, and bars. Some restaurants are Northstar Cafe, Bakersfield, Condado Tacos, and Forno Kitchen + Bar. It is also home to the North Market, which holds dozens of different merchants selling fresh foods, flowers, wines, and unique gifts. You’ll never get bored with so many things to do in the Short North.

12. Incredible Art Scene

Columbus has an amazing art scene, which makes sense since we have the Columbus College of Art and Design (CCAD) in our city. The Wexner Center on Ohio State’s campus has a public exhibit of contemporary art. The Short North Art District is also a sight to see. Colorful murals spread across buildings as public art and there is a gallery hop once a month. During these gallery hops, thousands of people fill high street to see over 20 galleries and hundreds of other venues displays of art.

13. Campus Bars Are Fun, Not Nasty

A major difference between OSU and other colleges, is that we have a great bar scene. A lot of college campuses don’t even have bars that students can go to (or get into). We have a bar for every occasion. Toos is the go-to place on Tuesdays. It is an underground bar that has live music every Tuesday. O Bar is a perfect place for Friday beat the clock. Midway, Big Bar, Ethyl’s, and Formaggio’s are some others. And if you’re feeling ratchet enough, Bullwinkles is always an interesting time. Not only are the campus bars great, but the downtown bars are also a go-to for thirsty Thursdays.

14. So Many New Dorms

North Campus at OSU is the place to be nowadays. So many new suite-style dorms have been and are being built. And they actually have air conditioning unlike many college dorms! These new dorms give you your own bathroom (no more communal showers) and a living room type of area. Definitely an upgrade from ancient 4×4 dorm rooms.

15. Buckeye Donuts

EVERY OSU student knows Buckeye Donuts and would recommend in a heartbeat. This place is open 24/7 and has amazing food; perfect for late nights after the bars. They have specialty donuts like the buckeye donut (of course), which has chocolate and peanut butter, red velvet, dutch chocolate, and many other flavors. Buckeye Donuts is a known game day tradition. People all over Columbus come here on Saturday mornings and the lines are out the door (it’s that good). As if it wasn’t already good enough, they have bomb chicken fingers and fries too!

16. Very Diverse Community

You’d think Ohio State is only home to Ohio residents, but that is not the case. We have many international students from all across the world. There is also a TON of people from New York, California, Florida, and Colorado. With a student body of almost 60,000, there are people from all walks of life.

17. We’re the “Best Damn Fans in the Land”

There’s a reason Ohio State fans have been given that title. Our school spirit is insane and so contagious. Generations after generations of students and alumni live, sleep, and breathe the Buckeyes! You literally cannot walk across campus any day of the week without seeing HUNDREDS of students in their scarlet and gray. Fans go crazy on game days in the wildest spirit wear, costumes, and face/body paint. We simply love our school.

18. Our Campus is Beautiful

Ohio State has a beautiful campus. We have the Oval, which is just under 2,000 acres of grass lawn with many walking paths. It is in the center of campus and is a major gathering place for students. On warm, sunny days you can find hundreds at the oval either studying, having a picnic, or playing with their dogs. At one end of the Oval, there is Thompson Library. This library is ginormous with 12 different levels and interesting glass architecture which makes it beautiful on the inside and out. Every OSU student knows that the 11th floor of Thompson has the absolute best views of campus.

19. Endless Study Abroad Opportunities

Ohio State has over 200 study abroad programs. Programs can range from two weeks, to a month, to a semester, to a whole year. There are so many options for everyone and every major. There are major specific programs and also general education study abroad programs. Whatever you want, we have it! Over 70 different countries are available including Spain, Australia, South Africa, Sweden, Brazil, and Greece.

20. Concert & Music Venues

Columbus is a major city, so many music artists come here for tours and performances. We have so many great concert venues including: EXPRESS LIVE!, Newport Music Hall, Nationwide Arena, The Schottenstein and many others. These venues have hosted top artists like Lil Uzi, Chris Brown, Drake, Tim McGraw, Keith Urban, and many more.

Although there are many reasons why Ohio State is so great, these are the top 20. This school is amazing in all aspects, which is what makes it the absolute best!
