Phones, I have one, you have one, your great grandmother has one, and possibly even your toddler nephew too. In this day and age it’s not as common to not have a cellular phone. They are so convenient for on the go activity and it is no wonder that many people, young and old alike, forget how to live without the use of their handheld lifeline. But just because you love your phone does not mean that you are addicted per say, however, if you feel like you always need it that may be a sign that you have a phone addiction.

2. Constantly checking your phone. Like CONSTANTLY. You check your phone repetitively to see what’s going on or what you may have missed. When it gets to the point that you are checking your phone every second, you may just be addicted my friend.

3. Tune out others in social environments. When you are in classroom settings or group meetings for discussion instead of participating you are more withdrawn and enraptured in your phone and tune out all social engagement and interaction with those around you. You lose interest or focus on things around you. When someone is talking to you and the entire conversation is a mixture of “yeah’s”, “I understand”, “right”, and fake laughing because you are too busy on your phone to hear and give your full attention to the person in front of you.

4. Sneaking to use your phone. In situations where you are not supposed to have your phone out, such as in strict classroom at work after they said there will be consequences, if you are on your phone yet and take the risk of sneaking to use it, you have a problem with it.

Whether you’re “Sir Text-a-LOT”, “Snapchat Queen”, or “Take-All-My-Minutes-Talking” or not you can still be in the early stages of being addicted to your phone. There can be many signs that you are addicted to something, some may be more serious than others. But every addiction, minor or ginormous, is worth being broken.
Feeling free from the pressures of constantly wanting something every second of every day and feeling as though you are missing out on life without it, is an addiction. Even if it is just with your phone, this is even more common now than ever. People miss out on a lot by focusing their attention more on a device than the people in front of them.

If this is the case for you please put down your phone, take a deep breath, inhale, take a deeper breath out, exhale, take a long moment to not only gaze out at the beautiful world around you, and appreciate the people in your life. That should be enough to allow you to focus. Your best moments will not come from what is taking place in the technology tightly fixated in your hands. When it comes to phones, you can’t live with them, but can live without them.
