12 Delicious Treats You Can Make With Box Cake Mix Besides Cake

Box cake mix isn’t solely for making cakes you know. With flour (amongst other necessities) being harder to find these days, box cake mix has become a handy tool just begging to be made into all kinds of delicious treats. If you don’t believe me, scroll through these twelve ideas. I bet you can’t make it to the fourth one without salivating.

Birthday Cake Shots

What’s better than a birthday cake? Boozy birthday cake. It doesn’t have to be your twenty-first birthday for you to enjoy these delights. You can make this delicious concoction with vanilla or birthday cake flavored vodka, chocolate liqueur, two teaspoons of white or yellow cake mix, and half-and-half. The shot glass rims are dipped in chocolate and coated in sprinkles for a sweet, quick chaser. If it’s a party of one, skip the shot glass entirely and grab a martini glass instead.

Pumpkin Cake Mix Cinnamon Rolls

Who says pumpkin is just for fall? I say we should celebrate pumpkins year-round! Pumpkin box cake mix works perfectly for these decadent cinnamon rolls drizzled with sweet brown sugar and maple glaze. You can prep it and leave it in the fridge overnight to let the dough rise. The next day, the fluffy dough is rolled out flat and filled with pumpkin puree, cinnamon, and pumpkin pie spice. When they pop out of the oven a half-hour later, just slather those bad boys in the thick glaze. Yum.

Red Velvet Waffles

This recipe is as easy as cake – er, waffles. It uses a red velvet box cake mix, four eggs, milk, and a waffle maker to create this luscious, chocolatey breakfast. For the topping, mix powdered sugar, cream cheese, and milk until it reaches the desired thickness. Add mini chocolate chips on top for extra chocolate flavor (can you ever have enough chocolate?). The result is a delicious dessert-for-breakfast meal that will start your morning off on a sweet note. Or your afternoon. Or evening. You can honestly eat this any time you want.

Cake Batter Fudge

Honestly, I could load this recipe with marketing buzzwords like “gluten-free”, “no-bake”, and “paleo”, but none of that will give it the justice it deserves. It is simply HEAVENLY. It is made with sweetened condensed milk, gluten-free cake mix (though the regular cake mix is always an option), sprinkles, and vanilla extract. Heat this addicting mix on a stovetop, then pour it into a pan, and into the fridge it goes for at least two hours – during which time I will be staring at the clock, drooling.

Cake Mix Brownies

This might be more of a “duh” moment than an “a-ha!” one. Making brownies with cake mix should be a no-brainer for me, but why would it when box brownie mixes exist? In case the store was out of brownies, here’s a quick fix for fudgy chocolate cravings. The only ingredients required besides what’s on the back of the box is milk, oil, an egg, and extra chocolate chunks (melts, chips, a chopped-up candy bar, whatever works). These brownies are guaranteed to be way more decadent than your usual box kind.

Lemon Snowflakes

Box cake mix is a genius shortcut for cookies – especially these chewy, buttery lemon snowflakes. Grab some lemon box cake mix, combine cream cheese, butter, egg, lemon juice and a bit of lemon peel in a bowl, and you’ve got yourself lemon cookie batter good enough to eat straight out of the bowl (I must advise against this due to salmonella, but I won’t tell if you don’t). Top them off with a dusting of snowy powdered sugar or you can whip up a quick citrus glaze with powdered sugar and lemon juice.

Oreo Cake Mix Donuts

I must say when I discovered you could make donuts out of box cake mix my inner twelve-year-old started screaming in joy. There are few things more satisfying in this world than dunking fresh, hot donuts into your weekend coffee, and this Oreo cookie donut recipe doubles that happiness. All it takes is a chocolate box cake mix and a donut pan. For the topping, try powdered sugar, milk vanilla extract, and a ton of crushed Oreos. Serve with a strong coffee or a cold glass of milk.

Chocolate Cake Batter Milkshake

For this recipe, you can use any flavor of box cake mix, but as a resident chocoholic, I have to follow my instincts which is why I chose this. This is the perfect compromise for not getting salmonella but still being able to eat cake batter. Honestly, on hot days opening an oven to bake a cake can be awful, so why not drink it instead? Milk, ice cream (pick your flavor), box cake mix, and vanilla extract blended until creamy make this summer treat an instant classic.

Cake Batter Ice Cream

Hmm, what’s the “no-bake” equivalent for ice cream? “No-churn”? Whatever it is, that is what makes this dessert so delectable, and it only takes four ingredients! Box cake mix, diet soda (like Sprite), sweetened condensed milk, and whipped cream are all you need for a serving rich, creamy bliss. Add anything you like to the mixture before tucking it away to freeze for two hours. Pistachios, walnuts, cherries, chocolate chips, candies…just picture the inside of a Cold Stone Creamery and take your pick.

Watermelon Cake Mix Cookie Sandwiches

Theses adorable sandwich cookies are made with strawberry cake mix, mini chocolate chips, green-colored sugar, and buttercream filling. You can make your own buttercream with butter, powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla, or you can substitute the whole thing for a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The cake batter is sprinkled with chocolate chips and spooned across a cookie sheet where they will soon emerge from the oven looking puffy, crinkled, and delicious. After they have bee turned into sandwiches, roll the sides in green sugar for a Pinterest-worthy summer treat.

Apple Butter Bars

What’s more wholesome than an apple? Apple butter. On cake. Strike that – warm, gooey apple butter on a soft cake, topped with a crunchy oat and walnut streusel. That’s the standard of comfort food I’m looking for. Yellowcake mix, vanilla, apple butter, walnuts, butter, oats, and more butter make this dish. Use the cake mix, vanilla, and cold butter to make the dough to line your pan with, then layer the apple butter and streusel on top. It is worth it just for the heartwarming apple pie smell.

Berry Delicious Campfire Cobbler

This is the perfect end to a fun, hot day. Take your handy iron skillet or Dutch oven, fill it with raspberry pie filling, and then pour a mixture of yellowcake mix, water, and oil on top. Let it simmer for a few minutes and then finish it off in the oven for twenty to thirty minutes. When it is done, you can either flip or leave it in the skillet for presentation purposes. They say adding a scoop of ice cream to this is optional, but I say it is mandatory.
