11 Tips For Class Registration At Lehman College

Ah, the summer is winding down which can only mean one thing, collegiates everywhere are preparing for the collegiate hunger games or as others may call it, registration. Here are some tips for not losing your sanity during registration at Lehman College! May the odds be ever in your favor.

1. Use DegreeWorks.

Before registration, you should start looking for a possible class for the next semester. Learn how to use degree works, the IT center in Carmen Hall as well as the Freshman Year Seminar classes help you learn how to use all software you’ll be using during your four years at Lehman. DegreeWorks shows you an in-depth analysis of your academic record and what class you need to graduate within your major and what  gen-eds you have left.

2. Some classes meet all three requirements, keep that in mind!

Don’t take the course catalog for granted, the catalog will reveal to you its secrets if you choose to understand and not skim it. There are a select number of classes at Lehman that meet up to three of your gen ed requirements if you choose to look. Why take three separate classes in order to meet three separate requirements if one class will meet them all for you?

To find these classes, go to Academic>search on your CUNYFirst account. After putting in the subject and course career, fill in what course attribute and designation you want the class to fulfill. Any classes that come up will now meet your English, writing intensive and word culture requirements.

3. Registration is on a first come first serve basis…seriously.

New student orientation and registration is a two day process. On day one you get perfectly rehearsed  speeches, collegiate appeal, and information filled folders. On day 2 you register- and I cannot stress enough that you need to be at least 2.5 hours early and here’s why…

On day 2, registration is in person and on a first come first serve basis. Registration for me started at 10am and I was so nervous that I got to Lehman at 6:30am hoping I would be the first one there because there were only 9 spots for the freshman nursing block. When I got to Lehman I was the second one there. As time passed and 10am approached more and more people started showing up. By 10am the ticket number was already at 138, need I say anymore?

4. Obtain the advisement that you need.

Academic, departmental, and peer advisors are probably the most undervalued assets. Advisors can clear up confusions about the requirements a class meets, professors, and advise you on how (in some cases) to test out of classes or gain an internship to fulfill credit for a class.

5. Make sure there are no holds on your account.

Continuously check your CUNYFIRST account prior to your registration date to make sure you don’t have any hold on your account. The last thing you want is to log on to CUNYFIRST and find out you have an unpaid balance for an overdue book.

6. Look into online classes as an option.

Between work, sports practice, and clubs, online classes are becoming more popular on the collegiate spectrum. Consider them! They are perfect for the busy student on the go. My tip is to plan ahead with an online class, schedule assignments, and allow time to do them just like any other class.

7. Space out your classes wisely.

Don’t schedule a class that cuts through 12:30pm. Trust me, you don’t want to be stuck in a lecture hall around 12:30pm when your stomach starts growling.

8. Put classes in your “shopping cart” prior to registration

That way when your registration window opens you can just hit register.

9. Monitor courses periodically.

Lehman may not seem like a huge school until registration comes around.

  • 7:28 – 108 seats available

  • 7:33 – 12 seats available

  • 7:40 – Class is filled and so is the wait-list

  • 7:45 – Your registration time opens and you’re mind boggled.

10. Backups for your backups

If a class has a cool professor or fulfills more than one requirement, chances are others will too. Have backup courses and their course number ready just in case. Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst.

11. Make sure your Wifi isn’t spotty.

The last thing you need is your wifi to be spotty during registration. For those of you who live with your family, I know it can be almost impossible to tell them to get off the internet for about ten minutes but it doesn’t hurt to try. Another option would be to go over to a friends place preferably someone who lives alone or with minimal people and use their wifi.
