With lockdown orders being issued in many cities around the world due to recent spikes in coronavirus cases, it means that we all have more free time on our hands to watch films or TV Shows on Netflix, the popular streaming service.
Throughout each month of the year, Netflix releases a plethora of its original films, TV Shows, series, miniseries, and documentaries. Besides the new holiday-themed special that the streaming service produced, some of the best Netflix Original Programs that have been released so far (As of December 9, the day that this article was written) include The Queen’s Gambit, MANK, Selena: The Series, and Fierce, to name a few.
Please note that all of Netflix Programs included in this article will be released for streaming on the platform between now and the end of January 2021. In addition, this article will contain a mix of Netflix Original Movies and Series (Both TV Shows and Miniseries).
Now, with all of that being said, here are 10 Upcoming Releases on Netflix That We Cannot Wait To Watch:
Film or series, one of the most highly anticipated Netflix Original Programs that will be released this month is the film adaptation of the renown play Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. Produced by Oscar-winner Denzel Washington, the film, which is set in Chicago during the 1920s, highlights the drama between “The Mother of Blues” Ma Rainey, her white manager, and her band.
In the film, Oscar-winning actress Viola Davis portrays the titular character alongside the late Chadwick Boseman, who portrays plays ambitious trumpeter Levee in his final film appearance. During the film’s post-production period, Boseman tragically passed away on August 28, 2020 due to colon cancer. The beloved actor was only 43 years old.
Inma Cuesta and Elite‘s Arón Piper star in this Spanish drama (which is based on Carlos’s Montero’s novel of the same name) series, which follows a substitute high school literature teacher (Cuesta), who begins to fear for her life after being haunted by the suspicious death of her predecessor, who died three weeks prior to the events of the series.
With an all-star cast featuring the likes of James Corden, Kerry Washington, and Oscar-winners Meryl Streep and Nicole Kidman, Ryan Murphy’s musical comedy The Prom is definitely one of the most highly anticipated Netflix Original films!
Based on the 2018 Broadway musical of the same name, the film adaption follows four burnt-out Broadway has-beens who team up to improve their reputations and support a worthy cause: the prom for a high school in a small-town in Indiana getting cancelled after a girl (Jo Ellen Pellman) wanted to bring her girlfriend (Ariana DeBose) as her date.
Although the original Karate Kid trilogy was centered around Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio), Cobra Kai is told from the perspective of Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka), Daniel’s nemesis from the first film. The show, which premiered in May 2018 on the now defunct YouTube Red, takes place 34 years after the events of the first film when Johnny reopens the Cobra Kai Dojo, which reignites his old rivalry with LaRusso, who opens Miyagi-do dojo. The duo’s feuding also leads to rivalries between students from both dojos, with some being caught in the crosshairs.
The Karate Kid spin-off series quickly became a huge hit among Netflix subscribers after the streaming service acquired the series from YouTube (which distributed Cobra Kai’s first two seasons) earlier this year. The highly anticipated third season of Cobra Kai is scheduled to be released in early January 2021.
Kornél Mundruczó’s drama follows a couple (Vanessa Kirby and Shia LaBeouf) in the year following the loss of their baby due to malpractice from the midwife tasked with delivering it.
Pieces of a Woman premiered at the 77th Venice International Film Festival, which was held this past September. Shortly after its premiere, Netflix acquired the film’s distribution rights. Kirby (who won the Volpi Cup for Best Actress) and her co-star Ellen Burstyn, who portrays the domineering mother of Kirby’s character, earned rave reviews for their performances in the film, which pundits predict will earn both women Oscar Nominations.
Oscar-winning actor Nicolas Cage will host this upcoming Netflix Docuseries, which takes a look into the history of some of the bad words that you are not supposed to say.
Carey Mulligan, Ralph Fiennes, Lily James, and Johnny Flynn star in this period piece drama, which reimagines the events the real-life events of the 1939 excavation of Sutton Hoo.
Based on Julie Quinn’s best-selling novels of the same name, Shonda Rhimes’s first original series for Netflix captures the highly competitive world of the members of the Regency London high society during the 1800s. The one and only Julie Andrews serves as the narrator of the highly-anticipated Netflix Original Series.
Oscar-Winner George Clooney directed and stars in this post-apocalyptic drama, which tells the story of a scientist who must venture through the Arctic Circle with a young girl to warn off a returning spaceship following a global catastrophe.
