10 Tips To Survive Your First College Party

Parties are a big deal in high school, but they’re an even bigger deal in college—it’s part of the whole “college experience.” Figuring out where you fit into the party scene can make your whole college experience that much better because it’s unique to you. The first weekend at school is where you’re going to get to test the water. Here are some tips on how to survive your first college party.

1. Bring a friend.

You may know the people attending or hosting the party, but it is always a good idea to bring a plus one and have a trustworthy buddy by your side. They’ll help you navigate your first awkward interactions, be your wingman/woman, help you get home, hold your hair back, and hand you a glass of water when they know you drank way more than you should have.

2. Turn down a drink if you don’t want to booze.

You know yourself best. You should remember that you are in a new place with people that you don’t know that well, if at all. It’s your call. It’s okay not to let your freak flag fly on your first night out.

3. Be open to meeting new people.

College is all about breaking free from your shell and meeting new, interesting people. Don’t waste your first night out standing in the corner people watching. If you see someone you think you would get along with, or even that you’re interested in, introduce yourself! You’ve got nothing to lose.

4. Dress your best.

Remember you are going to your first college party, so you may not want to wear your tallest heels. You never know where the night may take you, you may be doing a lot more walking than you anticipate. Wear something that gives you some confidence and makes you feel good about yourself—but make sure that whatever you wear is also comfortable.

5. Bring cash.

You may need the cash for a taxi ride home or any emergency that might pop up. You don’t want to find yourself stuck in a situation that you can’t find your way out of. Stash a little cash in your purse or jacket for some safety money.

6. Participate in drinking games. They are a lot more fun than they look.

An invitation to a drinking game may seem daunting at first. Take a deep breath. Drinking games are actually a great way to meet people. You could end up finding someone you have common interest with or just a buddy to laugh with for the rest of the night.

7. Remember that not every guy is out to drug you.

Don’t assume that every guy that approaches you is a creep. Some guys may be in the same situation as you—feeling awkward and out of place—and want someone to talk to. Don’t shut everyone out immediately. That’s not to say you shouldn’t be cautious. If you do feel that someone is genuinely being creepy, excuse yourself from the conversation and let one of your friends or someone else know.

8. Don’t be the drunkest person at the party.

Everyone wants to have a good time! Some people like to prove themselves and show off about how much they can drink. This can lead to some messy situations and later regrets. You don’t want to be known as the girl who threw up on herself, all over the bathroom, or in a bush (or all of these places) just during the first weekend at school.

9. Don’t mix alcohol.

If you aren’t very experienced with drinking alcohol, that’s fine. Just take it slow. Don’t mix alcohol throughout the night. If you start with vodka, stick with vodka all night. Don’t switch to something else. Stick to one type of alcohol throughout the night, your stomach will thank you.

10. Enjoy yourself.

Your first experience at a college party will be unforgettable! Remember, going to a party is all about having fun. Don’t stress or freak out over every little detail of the night. Live in the moment and make the most of it, you get to experience college once!
