10 Tips For Dealing With A Breakup And How To Get Back On Your Feet

Dealing with a breakup is difficult, but it is even worse in college. This is especially true if you go to the same college. However, you will get through it and there are ways to make it a bit easier. Here are 10 tips for dealing with a breakup that will help you get back on your feet.

1. Set goals and use your new time to accomplish them.

Dealing with a breakup can destroy your motivation to do anything productive, but do not let it. Turn the negative energy you are feeling into something positive. Set some new goals and work to accomplish them. This will motivate to keep going. These tips for dealing with a breakup will really help you.

2. Take up a new hobby

Have you wanted to learn something new, but had a hard time finding the time between having a relationship and holding a busy schedule? Now’s your chance to do it! Learn how to draw or make balloon animals. You can learn how to do anything with YouTube videos!

3. Do not bottle up your feelings

While it is tempting to keep your sad feelings hidden, this can backfire. If you are having a difficult day and just need to talk, consult a roommate, professor, or counselor. Temple’s Counseling Service is available on Broad Street and no appointment is needed.

4. Go out with your friends

There is nothing more relaxing than spending time with friends. They will be there to listen while you vent and to help take your mind off of the breakup, even if for a bit. Do something different than what you normally do.

5. Have a night in with family

If your family can come to campus to visit, have a night in. Order pizza, watch a movie and play games. Having your family around will help you let your emotions out and will help you have some fun time, even if you are not going anywhere.

6. Join a campus organization

Did you and your ex always plan date nights on Thursday? Look into what organizations meet Thursday night and join one! Do not be afraid to meet new people. This is also a great opportunity to add experience to your resume while learning something new.

7. Do not start dating right away

It may be tempting to start dating again directly after the breakup. However, dating on rebound is never a good idea. Take time to recover and grieve the loss of your relationship. The longer the relationship, the longer it may take to recover. You are the judge, but give yourself time before dating again.

8. Focus on yourself

While you were in a relationship, you were likely more focused on your significant other than yourself. You probably sacrificed seeing movies or going to restaurants that you want to in order to make the other person happy. Now’s the time to do the things you did not get to do.

9. Listen to some upbeat music

Music has the power to change your mood around. If you are having a rough day, make a playlist of positive, upbeat music to listen to as you work on assignments or walk around campus. You will be surprised at how much better you will feel, if only for a little bit.

10. To the best of your ability, avoid things that remind you of your ex until you feel better.

Revisiting the restaurant you and your ex ate at regularly or going to a museum you went to together will bring up sad and negative feelings. While it may be impossible in some cases, avoid these locations for a little bit while you heal and revisit them once the negative connotation goes away. Then you can make new memories with new people!
