Keep reading for these 10 things to NOT do at SJU orientation!
Everyone at orientation is in the same boat as you and probably has the same questions. Don’t be afraid to ask questions about St. John’s, because once school does start it might be harder to get all of the answers you need. It’s also a great time to ask about where things are on campus so you have a better idea when you start in the fall.
Although you may meet some awesome people during SJU orientation, this is only a handful of the people you will actually meet once school starts. Don’t limit yourself to only the friends you met because once school starts there will be plenty more to meet.
Labeling who you think you are or who you think others are is the worst way to meet people during orientation and at the start of school. Be open to meeting new people that you may think you might not usually be friends with. It’s a great way to expand your friend group.
You may think the Welcome Dance Party is lame, but it’s still a way to meet people and have fun. You’re out of your original orientation groups so you can meet other people. It also makes everyone look like a fool so you’re not alone there. Also you don’t want to be that person come senior year who has to say they didn’t go when everyone is reminiscing about it.
Your Orientation Leaders were once in your shoes. They know so much about the University, but can relate it to incoming students. They also represent everything about St. John’s and all belong to different clubs and societies that they can tell you all about. Finally, they’re full of advice that might help you when you start school.
We all do or say stupid things. Don’t let that define you if it happens at SJU orientation. Brush it off and continue to get out there, meet new people, and take advantage of all that St. John’s has to offer.
This is the best time to find out information about something on campus that may interest you. Whether it’s a club, Greek Life, Campus Ministry or athletics, you can find out a ton of information during Orientation. This is also a great time to ask questions because it won’t be as hectic as going to the Activities Fair the first week of school
It may be intimidating to talk to new people and put yourself out there but everyone during SJU orientation most likely feels that way too. Meet new people before school starts. It’s much easier in a smaller setting like orientation.
Public Safety during your years at St. John’s is either your best friend or your worst nightmare. Don’t do anything stupid during SJU orientation that makes them your nightmare right away. Follow the rules for this one weekend. You don’t need them hating you before school even starts.
A lot of information is thrown your way during SJU orientation. Don’t get overwhelmed. There are always people to reach out to once school starts and all other freshmen are in the same boat as you.
Now go make the most of SJU orientation and get ready for an amazing four years at St. John’s!
