10 Signs You’re Addicted to Your Favorite TV Show

1. You think about it all the time

From the moment you wake up, you either wish you were having a posh breakfast like Blair Waldorf from Gossip Girl or feel blessed you don’t have the struggles Rick and the survivors from the Walking Dead have. Throughout your day you’re replaying scenes in your head and imagine what it would be like if your coworkers had to fight for more hours as if they were in The Game of Thrones. Then later you just might consider the thug life but not aspire to be in jail like the lovely ladies from Orange is the New Black.

2. You relate your life situations to it.

When we get into sticky situations we naturally tend to pretend that we aren’t really there and like our favorite TV show, some hero is going to swoop in and rescue us. Other times, when we want to be courageous you pray that someone like Frank Underwood would take over your speech ability and say something too intelligent for others to process.

3. You feel like you could be one of the characters

We all know that there are instances where we are seriously channeling being just as fab as Samantha Jones from Sex and The City or aspiring to be as tolerant as Meredith Grey from Grey’s Anatomy. The truth is we’re infatuated with their roles and love the idea of  being as amazing as them! The more you watch the show the better you get at mirroring the characters’ habits. And it feels fantastic.

4. You want to tell everyone about it

After being so dedicated to watching your show, you realize a few distinct reasons why you enjoy the show so much- sometimes you don’t and that’s fine too. When you love and enjoy something so much, you just want to share it! You find yourself trying to pitch your favorite show to everybody that you know. While you may not be out on the street decked out in a white lab coat and an Erlenmeyer flask shouting at people to watch Breaking Bad, you would if you had the time. It feels good letting other people in on a good thing. You hope that others will enjoy your favorite show just as much as you do- it literally changed your life.

5. You think “What would they do in my situation?”

Making decisions is hard enough as it is, but when we think of our favorite character when making choices, the “correct” options seems to stand our among the rest. It’s as if we begin to think like Liz Lemon from 30 Rock and whatever happens, happens, a choice is made…and if all else fails, you fix it.

6. You buy or rent the DVDs

Nothing proves your passion and dedication more than purchasing the seasons of your favorite TV show. No, don’t you be ashamed of spending $120 on the Limited Edition Friends DVD set with all 10 seasons. Be proud that you own it, it’s a great asset to your humble abode. After all, you can watch it any time, any place, and any where!

7. You binge watch it over and over again

Don’t you just want to go back in time and relive meeting someone that is now special to you to remind yourself why you like them so much? True, there isn’t a time machine for that (yet) but those feelings can be felt again when watching your favorite show all over again! It’s as if it is your very first time: just you and the first episode of Dexter. You’re hooked once more even though it’s probably your 4th time watching it. You connect again and notice all the different details you missed in the previous views. The cycle is just too good to break!

8. You’re offended when people don’t know the character’s name

It’s like when Starbucks misspells your name on your cup. That feeling of “I’m just going to let it slide today” overcomes you. When they make the mistake again it’s “okay, I will correct you for the second time.” After the third time they get it wrong, “That’s it! I’m done.” It’s not your fault they don’t know everything from the opening theme to the order of the credits at the end of this show like you do. Be patient, not everyone was meant to love Arrested Development as much as you do.

9. You reconsider friendships based on this TV show

You almost reconsider being friends with people because this show has become a new basic connection for you to make with other. This show has basically become a prerequisite to a friendship with you. What else would you want to talk about?!

10. You can’t take the actors playing different roles seriously

When you see the actors from your favorite TV show in another film or series playing a different role, you can’t take them seriously. For example Bryan Cranston went from being the silly dad in Malcolm in the Middle to the total badass that is Mr. White in Breaking Bad. “How can you confuse my emotions?!” I thought. But that’s just one of many. Another switch that totally threw me was Chris Pratt’s upgrade from Parks and Rec’s loser Andy Dwyer to Star-Lord in Guardians of the Galaxy. These transitions can be good or bad- it really just depends on their new role. Deep down, these actors will always be to us what we first saw them in.
