10 Dorm Room Food Essentials to Stock Up On

Food is something that college students’ lives revolve around. However, sometimes the dining hall is gross, you don’t have enough swipes/money/whatever your college operates on, or you don’t feel like spending your money off campus. That’s why it’s important to stock up on dorm room food essentials. Below are 10 snacks you should always have on hand.

1. Pop Tarts

Pop Tarts are awesome because they don’t require any cooking (unless you prefer them toasted), and you can eat them at any time of the day. So, if you’re running to class in the morning and you don’t have time to grab breakfast, you can just snag a Pop Tart and eat it on the way. With a ton of different flavors to choose from, you’re guaranteed to find one (or many) you love!

2. Granola Bars

Granola bars are also great for on-the-go snacks, especially at breakfast time. A healthier option next to Pop Tarts, they still taste great. Again, this dorm room food essential comes in a variety of flavors and is conveniently portable.

3. Bread

Sandwiches aren’t just for elementary-school lunches. Sometimes, you’ll just really crave a PB&J. Bread is also great for yet another on-the-go breakfast: toast. If your stomach isn’t feeling great one day, eat some bread. Hungover? Eat some bread.

4. Fruit

You have to be a little more careful since fruit goes bad; but apples, bananas, grapes, etc. are healthy dorm room food items that that don’t require a ton of effort to eat. Also, fruit is delicious. Chop some up to bring to class, throw some on top of a bland salad in the dining hall, or just eat ’em plain.

5. Saltines/Crackers

Saltines are tasty, but also a great remedy for an upset stomach. You can dip them in peanut butter and other tasty spreads. A lot of cracker brands sell little portable packs that include some sort of dip, which, once again, are really great when you’re in a rush.

8. Ice Cream

Roommate went through a break-up? Ice cream. Stressed about homework? Ice cream. Obviously this means you’ll need to have a freezer in your room – but don’t worry, many small fridges come equipped with a freezer section. This is also great for storing leftovers you won’t eat right away. PS – don’t forget to keep a ton of plastic spoons on hand, too!

9. Seasonal Foods

Just because you’re in college doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate the holidays right! Keep candy corn stashed away for Halloween, candy canes for Christmas, heart-shaped chocolates for Valentine’s Day, etc.

10. Easy Mac

I haven’t met anyone who doesn’t love mac and cheese. Easy Mac gives you tasty pasta in under five minutes. All you have to do is add water and put it in the microwave, so there’s basically no way that you’ll set off the smoke alarm in your common room.
