10 DIY Headboards For Your Dorm Room

Most people believe that the bed is the focal point of any living space, so why not jazz up your dorm room with a fancy headboard? Keep reading for 10 awesome DIY headboards that are sure to make any roommate jealous!

1. The Book Collage

You’re either going to love this one or shed tears due to the destruction of books. Either way, the look is very aesthetic. All that you’ll need to make this is: books, metal nails, wood, and glue. (It’s really easy to find books for reduced prices at a used book store.) And the design process is simple as well. Nail the books to the piece of wood and glue the pages of each book down so they don’t flip around!

2. The Traditionally Upholstered

Normally an upholstered headboard would cost you hundreds of dollars. But honestly, it sounds like a trivial thing to blow hard earned money on. In order to make a DIY upholstered headboard, all you need is an inexpensive headboard, foam/batting, muslin, and your favorite fabric. You surround the headboard with each layer and staple it in place.

3. The Chalkboard-Not-Bored

Through the magic of chalkboard paint, anything can become a chalkboard. So why not personalize your headboard? All you need is wood, primer, and chalkboard paint (which comes in a variety of colors!) After the paint has dried and you’ve attached the headboard, leave messages and reminders for yourself.

4. The Fabulously Framed Fabric

Have a picture frame but no artwork to hang? Use that as your headboard. Install a band of fabric into the frame, just as you would with a picture. The wooden frame adds a rustic touch to the look, while the fabric ties the color scheme altogether.

5. The Shutters Side-By-Side

I love the cozy yet practical feel to this one. Old shutters (previously used for windows) can be re-purposed with paint and finishing gloss to make for a cute headboard! The revamped shutters would then be attached side by side. Different shapes and sizes of shutters will add a quirkiness to these DIY headboards!

6. The Lattice Look

This looks like a complicated woven basket but I can assure you that it isn’t. You can buy lattice fencing at a home supplies store. Then you would attach two wooden side pieces and the top with screws. I like the idea of depth in this piece because the headboard looks different from each angle.

7. The Corkboard Display

Not only is this headboard creative but it’s really aesthetic. First and foremost, you’ll need to create the frame by nailing and gluing together two layers of wood. Make sure to leave a gap between one of the edges so that you can move a transparent Plexiglas cover (optional) in and out.

8. The Why-Not-Wallpaper?

So you want that extra pop of pattern and color to add to the overall theme of your room? Using wallpaper may not be so practical in terms of comfort, but it’s pretty. As long as you have throw pillows to lay on, you should be fine. Plus, it’s way less expensive than the previous DIY headboards ideas.

9. The Drastic Drape-It

The high-hung curtain in this DIY headboard works as a focal point and extends the room, visually. Your selected curtain is strung over a pole that is screwed into the wall. It’s so chic and stylish. And you can easily match the curtain to your bedding.

10. The Wall Sticker Cop-Out

Just like the wallpaper, this isn’t a real headboard. But it looks like it, right? Wall stickers have become so much more realistic and ornate over the last few years. Just slap a wall sticker onto your wall and you don’t have to worry about the downsides of an actual headboard!
