Whether you’re a freshman or a senior at St. John’s, you’ve been told plenty of times about all of the resources available to you on campus, but have you actually taken advantage of them? Here is a list of campus resources you may have known, but never knew how helpful they could be, as well as some campus hacks to make your life easier! Get ready to achieve even more great things during your time at SJU!
You probably walk past this desk in DAC all the time, but you need to stop and see what’s actually offered. Campus Concierge is not only an information center for all on and off-campus events, but it’s also where you can get discounted tickets for upcoming events, services, activities and more! Located across from the Living Room in DAC, and open Monday through Friday from 9 AM to 6 PM, the Campus Concierge can provide you with information about all events and services on campus, and also connects you with NYC. Think MetroCards, AMC and Regal movie tickets, plus discounted tickets to Broadway shows and baseball and basketball games! It doesn’t get better than this. While you may think the Career Center, is just a place to discuss your resume or find an internship, it actually offers so much more. Located across from Marillac in CCK Hall, they can provide you with all of the keys to success.
Career Services offers students a wide range of career-related education and development, which includes just some of the following resources:
This is a place where all students, faculty and staff are able to come in and discuss their writing with trained consultants. Located in the library, you can schedule sessions in order to become aware of your writing strengths and weaknesses, while also developing strategies for becoming a more effective writer. When you meet with a consultant you’ll receive advice and engage in self-reflection and critical thinking. You’ll also learn techniques for better planning, drafting, revising and editing.
If there’s one thing that college students love, it’s freebies! This freebie is an extra special one though, since it gives you the chance to brush up on current events each day. Grab a copy when you’re eating breakfast in Monty’s, passing through Marillac Terrace, standing in line at Starbucks or sitting in the Library on the third floor.
This resource, courtesy of the Library, provides you with everything you need for those dreaded research papers. Databases allow you to search periodicals, journals, newspapers and magazines for articles on specific topics. The A-Z list arranges them alphabetically by the name of the database. You can even browse by subject to help narrow your search.
When you’re not busy with school, take a break and head to the Fitness Center in Carnesecca. Equipped with stairmasters, treadmills, stationary bikes, various abdominal exercise benches, dumbbells, ellipticals and plate loaded free weights, the Fitness Center allows you to achieve a full workout. Solo workouts not your thing? Then head over for a fitness class including Spin, Yoga and Pilates, Self-Defense and Cardio. You can find an updated schedule each semester here. Personal training is also available. Oh and did I mention this is all available for free? Just enter with your StormCard and get ready to sweat!
This resource allows you to print anything, any time. WEPA print kiosks are located throughout campus and this service enables you to send your print jobs to the cloud then release the job to any of the kiosks. You can send from your laptop, desktop, iOs/Android device or a USB. Each job is charged to your StormCard, and with $40 availble in printing money it’s hard to run out. Learn more about how to use WEPA here!
The University Learning Commons, or ULC, provides academic support for all students. Located in the Library Room 103, assistance is available through professional and peer tutoring for a variety of subject areas. To make an appointment and see what subjects are available click here and get ready to ace those tests!
Meal exchange is something freshmen tend to not realize exists until second semester. If you have a meal plan, then you have meal exchange available to you. A meal exchange means using a meal swipe in a retail location, instead of at Monty’s. This means way more food options for just a swipe. You can use meal exchange during lunch from 11 AM to 4:59 PM and dinner from 5 PM until closing. Just be aware that if you use a meal swipe in Monty’s, then you can’t use a meal exchange in the same meal period.
This last hack is for all those who either A. Hate waiting in lines or B. Are looking for a quiet place on campus. First those who hate waiting. In the Law School you can find another Starbucks, as well as even more food options. The Starbucks is never as busy as the one in DAC, and although you can’t use meal points in the Law School, consider treating yourself occasionally to a made-to-order stir-fry or a freshly made salad. Now for those who want quiet. The Law School is a great place to go when you need to study and get work done, because it’s infinitely more quiet than DAC and never as crowded.
Make sure to take advantage of all of these resources and hacks during your time at SJU; you’ll thank yourself later!
