Knitting can seem like a daunting hobby to start if you don’t have anyone with you to help. That being said, it isn’t as difficult as it seems. All it takes is knowing two easy stitches, the knit stitch and the purl, and that’s it! That’s all that knitting is. However, even knowing that it can still feel overwhelming to get started without having any frame of reference for which project to begin with. So here are ten easy knitting projects that you can use to jumpstart your knack for knitting.
This is probably the first easy knitting project that people recommend when you’re starting. Not only are there hundreds if not thousands of free resources online for you to use to make this. There are also free patterns, YouTube tutorials, blog how-to articles, and there is no wrong way of making a scarf. All you have to do is get some yarn, cast on for as full as you want to make the scarf, then keep knitting till it’s long enough, and then you’re done. I promise you it is that easy. By the end of your first scarf, you’ll be wondering why you were so afraid of picking your knitting needles in the first place.
Much like the scarf, but just a bit bigger. Shawls are a great and easy knitting project for if you want to practice your stitch tension over a long period. Don’t be fooled, though; this is still one of the simplest things you can do with a wide variety of free online resources that you can pull from. All a shawl is, is a large square, rectangle, or shoulder that you drape over your shoulders. Just think of it like a over-sized scarf, and it won’t seem that bad at all to get started with, I promise.
Who doesn’t love a beautiful cozy blanket? Let me tell you, there is nothing like snuggling up, snug as a bug. Especially in something that you have put time, love, and effort into making. Not only that, but it’s a super easy knitting project. You’ll be baffled with how effortless it is to make. Sure it might be a bit time consuming, but if you use just a bit thicker yarn and larger needles, you’ll be amazed at how quick it will go. Not only will a blanket be an excellent gift to yourself, but you can also make beautiful blankets for your family and loved ones.
One word: pompoms. Not only is this an easy knitting project to get into, but it’s also trendy. It may seem technically tricky, but all you need is either an extra needle to sew the two ends together, to make a closed-loop or circular needles, and that’s it. But also, you get the added benefit of adding pompoms to the top if you so choose. Never let your ears freeze off your face again with the power to make your hat out of thin air. Not only that, but there are all kinds of hats you can make, from beanies to ski hats and everything in between.
There’s no denying that having extra storage when necessary is one of the most useful things to have in our modern lives. So being able to create one from almost nothing may as well be a gift from above. Like most things, all you need to do is have the ability to make a rectangle as big as you like. When you’re finished with that, you fold the fabric in half and use a tapestry needle with matching thread and sew together the bottom and side to finish it. All you need is a piece of string or a ribbon to cinch it tight, and you’re done!
Not only do they look adorable and very aesthetic, but they’re also great and useful in general! This easy knitting project will help you say goodbye to any finger burns from your hot mugs; and help keep your drinks warmer for longer! Although, one of the downsides to this project is that it will be tough to get it off your mug once it is on. So if you’re going to make it, but sure that you won’t feel any remorse when you’re not able to see the rest of your mug again.
The possibilities with this one are endless, and all you need is your head, quite literally. Knit a thin rectangle, almost like a strip of fabric or a skinny scarf, till it can wrap around your head, then sew it together with a need and some extra yarn, then you’re finished! That’s all that you need for this easy knitting project. Everything else is entirely up to you. You could put a flower on it to decorate it; you could weave some details into it with other colored yarn or embroider it. Not to mention it’ll take like an hour max to finish it all.
These can seem like one of the most daunting things on this list so far. Aren’t gloves supposed to be super tricky? Well yes, but that’s because of the fingers. When you take the fingers out of the equation, you get the equivalent of a sock for your hands. You can make this with a rectangle, much like many other things on this list.
The best part about this one is you can make them as tight or as loose on your legs as you want. So many leg warmers usually just don’t cut it for me. They’re either too loose and feel weird, all bunched up around my ankles, or they just aren’t warm enough. Well, if you make them yourself, then you can get the best of both worlds! Once again, create a rectangle that can cover around your leg then sew it into a tube for your legs to fit through. If you want, you can even sew it directly onto your leg as you work to make sure you get the exact fit. Just don’t make them too tight that you can’t get them off.
Cold hardwood floors in winter are the bane of my existence. What better way to prevent cold and frozen toes than a pair of warm slippers? Not only can you make them as big as you want, so you know they will fit your feet. But you can also choose the color, how fuzzy or soft they are, there are so many possibilities.
