10 Awesome Classes You Can Take at Kent State

Academics can all get a little bit boring: you wake up every morning and get ready for your typical statistics, history, chemistry, and literature class. You graduated high school thinking you would never have to be anywhere near an English text book ever again. Your first couple of semesters at Kent State are typically meant for fulfilling requirements, but that doesn’t mean you can’t squeeze some fun courses in to keep things interesting. Here are 10 Kent State classes that will add some pizzazz to your day, and the best part- no prerequisites required! Happy “studying”…if that’s what you want to call it!

1. Baking and Pastry Fundamentals

You might only be in Kent, Ohio, but this course will have you feeling like you own a decadent macaroon shop in Paris. You will develop advanced skills and knowledge in the production and selection of quality handcrafted products while working with cakes, tortes, and chocolate. Cupcake Wars, watch out.

2. Food, Wine, and Beverage Pairing

You know those perfectly crafted cheese plates with the wine pairings at restaurants? The person who put together the wine with its perfect pairings probably took a course very similar to this one. In this course, you will learn about different dishes on menus for various tastes and the wine that pairs with it, and why. The obvious downside with this course is that you must be 21 to enroll.

 

3. Scuba Diving

Who would’ve thought Kent State would have a scuba diving course? This class is designed to make students a comfortable and qualified diver, capable of conducting recreational dives to shallow depths and deep water diving. Beautiful vacation to Bora Bora is not included, but you’ll get the chance to be a real life mermaid in Ohio.

4. Studio African Dance

Kent State’s Dance Department is highly acclaimed, and while they provided courses teaching students the fundamentals of jazz, tap, ballet, and hip-hop, one of the more interesting courses is African dance. Appreciate a culture of your own, or different than yours, and get acquainted with the basic elements of African dance.

5. Interviewing

As much as we like to pretend it’s not going to happened, we’re all going to be off in the real world sooner than later trying to land our dream jobs. This course will teach you techniques, principles and practical skills for interviews across all platforms, including job searching. Anna Wintour would even be impressed with your skills.

6. Hardcore Abs

Beat the freshmen, sophomore, junior, AND senior-15 with this class. This course examines methods and techniques that will improve abdominal and back strength. Get a 6-pack AND some credit hours to put towards graduation. There’s no excuse for school work getting in the way of working out now.

7. Social Media Strategies

We’re living in the 21st century, therefore the ways we learn, pass along information, and find jobs is different. This course is designed to help students understand and use social media in critical and strategic ways to improve their lives and careers. Who knows, after this course you just might beat Twitter at its own game.

8. Fashion Show Productions

Have you ever watched live streams of New York Fashion Week and wondered what goes on behind the scenes? This class will teach you all that and more. This course goes over the production planning, organization and physical aspects of a fashion show. Be sure to pay attention in class, because you and your peers will be producing your own fashion show at the end of the semester!

 

9. Piano Class for Non-Music Students

If you’re like me, you totally regret quitting piano lessons when you were younger because you hated practicing. Revisit those skills and take this piano class through the Music Department, and you’ll be on your way to becoming the next Mozart.

10. Floral Design

Take this class because flowers are downright beautiful, right? In this course, you’ll learn floral design theory, history, techniques and the skills required in the commercial floral design industry. Maybe you can even open a florist shop next to your macaroon bakery in Paris one day.
